WINTERHITS is an ongoing mixtape series created and produced by me, FRITZ VON RUNTE, that has been running for over 25 years.
The concept began as the opposite of a typical "summer hits" compilation. Instead of mainstream radio favorites, WINTERHITS originally focused on b-sides, obscure versions, and the strange, overlooked music that didn't have massive popular appeal.
Over time, WINTERHITS has evolved into something much more complex than a simple mixtape. Each release is essentially a sound collage that transforms music through extensive manipulation, editing, and effects processing. I take both familiar and unknown tracks and reshape them into something entirely different from their original form.
The creative process involves layering instrumentals with acapellas from different songs, mixing fragments and samples, incorporating found sounds, radio announcements and commercials. This creates dense, textured compositions where recognizable elements blend with the unexpected, making even well-known songs sound completely fresh. What also sets WINTERHITS apart is its deeply personal approach. Each one is a love letter to my friends and to the people that listen to the stuff I do.
These days I make one of them a year, but in all these years I made over 50. Some of them are on Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, YouTube etc... Look for 'Fritz von Runte'. Some are on bandcamp for free, or pay what you want (same difference!)
